The LIVESS Program

Empowering students to become functioning members of

their community.

Mission

The mission of the LIVESS Program is to provide a safe, educational, environment in which participants can strive to develop age appropriate life, vocational, and social skills. We actively foster these skills by providing young adults with quality facilities, programming, support and opportunity.

Criteria

To qualify for participation in the LIVESS Program, students must be in 11^th or 12^th grade and either be participating in the NYSAA, or be on an IEP Diploma Track.

Programming

The LIVESS Program incorporates everyday living tasks into the daily curriculum. A fully functioning kitchen, and laundry area enables participants to learn how to maintain a kitchen, prepare meals, and do their own laundry. A partial list of topics incorporated into our curriculum for independence includes:

Philosophy

In order for young adults, in grades 11 & 12, with social, emotional, behavioral, and learning challenges to develop the necessary life skills and self efficacy to function independently, they first must be taught the necessary skills to do so and then have an opportunity to practice these skills in a structured environment so that skill internalization and mastery can occur. Learning with hands on, meaningful tasks enables participants to develop life skills in a supervised setting as they perform daily tasks. In doing so, a greater sense of independence is achieved which leads to a yen for continued learning. In tandem, the ability to master a vocational skill set allows for the option of independent living to become a reality.
